Dear members of the ADDE and the dental distribution industry,

Our next ADDE Annual General Meeting (AGM) is taking place in Madrid next week, from 11 to 13 May. In the run-up to this board meeting, I would like to use this foreword to address some recent developments at EU-level that may be of interest to you.

Firstly, the European Commission is putting together an expert group on artificial intelligence (AI). As AI is becoming increasingly important in a growing number of sectors in our economy and society, a European AI Alliance consisting of various representatives of civil society will ensure competitiveness, shape the conditions of AI use and development, and discuss its ethical, legal and socio-economic consequences. Examples of such representatives can include businesses, academics, policy makers, consumer organisations or trade organisations such as the ADDE itself.

Secondly, the European Commission has adopted a notice on BREXIT and EU legislation concerning medical and industrial devices.

On the one hand, the notice informs stakeholders about the identification of economic operators. From the withdrawal date onwards, manufacturers or importers established in the UK will no longer be considered as economic operators in the EU, whereas importers established in the EU-27 will have to comply with the specific obligations relevant to ‘third country products’.

On the other hand, UK bodies will no longer be in a position to perform conformity assessment tasks pursuant to EU legislation. Where conformity assessment by a Notified Body should be required, they will need certificates issued by an EU-27 Notified Body to demonstrate compliance for their products.

Our 2018 AGM offers a great opportunity for all ADDE members to connect with colleagues from the global industry. Moreover, the 2018 European Dental Trade Survey, covering all developments in the European dental industry, will be launched at the event.

I am looking forward to seeing you there.

Yours faithfully,

Dominique Deschietere
President of the ADDE
